Multiscale variability in the Balearic Sea: An altimetric perspective

چکیده
[1] The present-day availability of an 18 year record of 1=8 merged Mediterranean Sea sea level anomaly (SLA) data enables a contemporary description of long-term mesoscale activity in the Balearic Sea. SLA data from satellite altimetry are used to study the variability of sea level and surface geostrophic circulation at different spatial and temporal scales within this complex and relatively understudied region in the western Mediterranean (WMED). We find that the mean Northern Current along the Iberian slope is strongest in autumn, although higher variability in winter leads to stronger peaks in kinetic energy. The Balearic Current, which flows along the northern slopes of the Balearic islands, also has its maximum expression in autumn. Across the two Balearic channels (Ibiza and Mallorca), key locations that partly regulate meridional exchange in the WMED, observed seasonal variability in geostrophic velocity anomalies conforms rather well to prior descriptions, suggesting cautious confidence in the use of the Mediterranean merged altimeter product in nearshore regions. Circulation through the channels is maximum in winter. The channel data support the hypothesis that the channel circulation may be hindered by the intermittent presence of the Western Intermediate Water mass, which sometimes forms in winter in the Gulf of Lions. This is the first time that an analysis of variability in the Balearic channels has been performed using altimetric data.

North Atlantic climate control on plankton variability in the Balearic Sea, western Mediterranean
[1] We assessed interrelations between climatic, meteorological and hydrological factors in the Balearic Sea, and identified drivers of the abundance variability of planktonic copepods over the period 1994–2003. Temporal variability in the total abundance of copepods appears to be indicative of the southern spreading of the Northern Current, and therefore of meridional transport of water masses...
متن کاملMulti-Satellite Altimeter Data Analysis and Unification in the Mediterranean Sea
For long-term sea level variability studies a single altimetric mission of high accuracy and long duration is the ideal situation. In reality, several altimetric missions have been flown and the corresponding sea level heights present an increasing accuracy, mainly due to the improved orbital and geophysical corrections applied to the measured data. At least one different preprocessing is used ...
متن کاملSimulation and analysis of the mesoscale circulation in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea
The large-scale and mesoscale circulation of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea are simulated with an eddyresolving primitive-equation regional model (RM) of 1/16 resolution embedded in a general circulation model (GM) of the Mediterranean Sea of 1/8 resolution. The RM is forced by a monthly climatology of heat fluxes, precipitation and wind stress. The GM, which uses the same atmospheric forci...
متن کاملExploiting the potential of an improved multi mission altimetric dataset over the coastal ocean
[1] Until now, most satellite altimetry studies of the coastal ocean have been based on along-track data from a single mission, whereas up to four missions were operative in 2002–2005. Here, to monitor the coastal ocean we have applied specialized corrections and dedicated processing strategies to compute a multimission data set at a mean distance of 32 km of the coast. The resulting altimetric...
متن کاملAssessment of Altimetric Range and Geophysical Corrections and Mean Sea Surface Models - Impacts on Sea Level Variability around the Indonesian Seas
The focus of this study is the assessment of the main range and geophysical corrections needed to derive accurate sea level time series from satellite altimetry in the Indonesia seas, the ultimate aim being the determination of sea level trend for this region. Due to its island nature, this is an area of large complexity for altimetric studies, a true laboratory for coastal altimetry. For this ...
